About OAHC
OAHC is a non-profit collaborative of 10 organizations dedicated to facilitating health and counseling services for Ohio’s youth. In 2017, they served 88,500 students. Switchbox has partnered with RUC, an OAHC collaborator, since 2010, initially developing a database to support their reporting and informational needs. Over time, the application’s reporting capabilities have been enhanced to include features for regional coordination, subcontractors, grant funding segments, rosters, and associated demographic data.
The Challenge: Legacy Data Blocked Visualization Potential
OAHC purchased Tableau to help with creating data visualizations and needed to configure their data appropriately to utilize this new software. For OAHC, utilizing Tableau with Excel or CSV spreadsheets was the most desired outcome. With the purchase of this Tableau, OAHC had extensive Tableau application training and needed to adjust the exports of their data in order to create the specialized charts and visualizations offered by the software.
The Solution: Unique System Unlocked Reporting Potential
OAHC sought to leverage the data visualization capabilities of their newly acquired Tableau software. Their preferred method was to utilize Tableau with data exported from their existing system into Excel or CSV spreadsheets. While OAHC received comprehensive Tableau training, they needed to adapt their data exports to effectively create the specialized charts and visualizations the software offered.
Switchbox collaborated with OAHC to understand their specific Tableau output requirements. A test account was used to assess integration possibilities. The evaluation led to the decision to modify the OAHC database application’s exporting functionality and provide training on how to integrate these exports with Tableau. Switchbox developed a spreadsheet mapping the relationships within the non-relational database using a complex SQL query. This relational data was then used to update the application, enabling it to export CSV files suitable for import into Tableau. Tableau’s intuitive design then transformed the exported data into a user-friendly schema for chart creation and data visualization.
The Outcome: Visual Data Attracts New Funding and Growth
RUC and its collaborators have successfully adopted this new tooling system. They are enthusiastic about using Tableau’s data visualizations to communicate insights to their funding sources. OAHC anticipates that this Tableau implementation will be instrumental in attracting new funding and fostering organizational growth.
