The Challenge
Legacy data blocked visualization potential
OAHC purchased Tableau to help with creating data visualizations and needed to configure their data appropriately to utilize the new software. For OAHC, utilizing Tableau with Excel or CSV spreadsheets was the most desired outcome.
With the purchase of Tableau, OAHC had received extensive application training—but needed to adjust the exports of their existing data in order to create the specialized charts and visualizations offered by the software.
Our Approach
Mapping data relationships for visualization compatibility
Switchbox collaborated with OAHC to understand their specific Tableau output requirements and used a test account to assess integration possibilities. The evaluation led to the decision to modify the OAHC database application’s exporting functionality and provide training on how to integrate those exports with Tableau.
Switchbox developed a spreadsheet mapping the relationships within the non-relational database using a complex SQL query—creating the relational structure needed to drive Tableau-compatible exports.
What We Built
A unique system that unlocked reporting potential
Switchbox used the relational data map to update the application, enabling it to export CSV files suitable for import into Tableau. Tableau’s intuitive design then transformed the exported data into a user-friendly schema for chart creation and data visualization.
Training was provided to ensure OAHC’s team could leverage the new exports confidently and independently within their Tableau environment.
The Results
Visual data attracts new funding and growth
RUC and its collaborators have successfully adopted the new tooling system. They are enthusiastic about using Tableau’s data visualizations to communicate insights to their funding sources.
OAHC anticipates that this Tableau implementation will be instrumental in attracting new funding and fostering organizational growth—turning years of data into compelling, visual evidence of impact.
